Ipswich four-year-old takes on At Home Winter Wonderwheels powered by Marvel challenge
Bella Smythe, a cheerful four-year-old from Ipswich, is an inspiring little girl with big goals. Born prematurely at just 2lbs 4oz and diagnosed with bilateral dyskinetic cerebral palsy, Bella faces significant challenges but never lets them dampen her spirit. While she currently needs support to stand or walk, Bella loves to play and is eagerly looking forward to starting school next year.
Supported by her family – mum Lizzy, dad Ben, and her half-sister Abbie – Bella is set to take on this year’s At Home Winter Wonderwheels powered by Marvel challenge. This two-week event invites people of all abilities to complete as much distance as they can, and Bella will be covering miles using her walker, trike, self-powered wheelchair, and Wizzybug powered wheelchair.
Raising Funds for Bella’s Therapy and Equipment Needs
Mum Lizzy, a quality assurance engineer, shares that although Bella benefits from NHS-provided physiotherapy, she needs more intensive support than what is currently available. The family has found that Bella thrives with regular therapy sessions and custom orthotics. They are fundraising to cover the costs, which include £1,500 for a week’s intensive therapy with SwimLab and £1,750 for custom ankle orthotics that greatly improve Bella's mobility and comfort.
Lizzy explains: “Being as mobile as possible is beneficial for Bella’s health and independence. We’re encouraging her to take on the Winter Wonderwheels challenge to motivate her to move as much as possible – she loves being active, but it’s also hard work for her.”
Supporting Bella’s Path to Independence
Bella’s family is receiving support from Tree of Hope, a UK children’s charity that helps families fundraise for medical expenses and provides tax benefits, such as gift aid, that enhance donations.
Tree of Hope CEO Becky Andrew expressed her support: “We wish Bella all the best with the Winter Wonderwheels challenge. Tree of Hope is here to support however we can.”
How You Can Help Bella’s Mission
Bella’s journey to greater independence relies on the support of donors. Your contribution, however big or small, will help Bella access essential therapy and equipment that will make a real difference in her life.
