Chelmsford Woman Takes on 100 Push-Ups Daily Challenge to Support Friend's Daughter with cerebral palsy
10 Nov 2024
Chelmsford resident Jana Wilkins, 51, has embarked on a month-long challenge of 100 push-ups per day to raise funds for Hope Lane, a 12-year-old girl with quadriplegic spastic dystonic cerebral palsy. Hope, who was born at 27 weeks weighing just 750g, faces daily challenges with mobility and requires ongoing support to improve her strength and independence.
Hope's Journey
Hope and her twin sister Ava were born prematurely, and Hope was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at just 18 months old. Despite being unable to sit, stand, or walk unaided, Hope is a bright, cheerful girl who loves spending time with her family and playing with her siblings. To aid her mobility and improve her quality of life, her family has adapted their home with features such as a lift, ramps, and a wet room. Hope also attends private physiotherapy sessions twice a week, which cost around £1,000 per month.
Jana’s Fundraising Efforts
Jana, a health entrepreneur from Chelmsford and close friend of Hope’s family, has taken on various fundraising challenges for Hope over the years, including a marathon and ultramarathon. This October, she chose to challenge herself with 100 push-ups per day, a task she admits has been tough. "Push-ups are far from my favorite thing, and 100 per day is hard. I can't do them all at once, but I'm sticking to it for Hope," Jana shared. Her dedication aims to raise awareness and funds for Hope’s ongoing physiotherapy and other essential needs.
Family's Ongoing Efforts
Hope’s mother, Rachel, 44, is deeply grateful for Jana's continuous support. "Hope’s physio helps with her mobility and confidence, but the costs add up, and there’s always new equipment as she grows. We’re incredibly fortunate to have supportive friends like Jana." The family has taken on their own challenges, including Rachel completing a triathlon and her husband, Phil, taking on the Three Peaks Challenge to contribute to Hope’s fund.
How to Support
The family’s fundraising efforts are supported by the children’s charity, Tree of Hope, which enables families to raise funds for healthcare needs beyond what the NHS can provide. CEO Becky Andrew expressed her support: “We’re delighted that Hope’s family has such a strong network, and we wish Jana all the best with her challenge.”
